Weisstannen – Sässbachfall

Weisstannen - Sässbachfall

I did this hike on the 14th of July, 2024. I had seen pictures of Sässbachfall which looked really nice, so I decided it was time to visit the waterfalls. I wanted to hike more than just from Weisstannen to the waterfalls and back, so I decided on the loop below. This was both to make the hike longer, but also to get some views of the valley from above, which I can definitely recommend.

Full route: Swisstopo

I started out in Weisstannen, which I reached after a train ride from Zürich to Sargans, from where I continued with the bus. It was a really nice July morning, and I had started out early, as the temperatures were supposed to get high in the afternoon. The first 45 min of the hike was  relatively flat and a nice slow start.

After starting the ascent, I quickly made my way up and got the first views over the valley and surrounding mountains. It had rained a lot the days before, so the trail was some places rather muddy, and I had to take a couple of detours, although nothing too long.

When I reached the peak of Horn, I could see down into the valley, that goes into the waterfalls. In the background, I could also see some of the peaks around Pizol, where I earlier did the Pizol 5 lakes hike, which I can really recommend.

On my way down, I came across an amazing little rentable hut. I can’t imagine a greater location for an overnight stay, and I would really like to come back. The trail down was quite steep, but luckily not as muddy as it had been on the top part.

After following the valley for some time, I finally reached the waterfalls, and it was just as great, as on the pictures I had seen. There are several waterfalls, and you can hike up on either side of the suspension bridge at the bottom, to get closer to the waterfalls.

I was meeting some friends down here, and we hiked up on both sides and it was really nice. There was quite a lot of people, but since the area is large, it didn’t feel too crowded or busy on the trails leading closer to the waterfalls.

After about an hour visiting the waterfalls, we made our way back to Weisstannen. The trail along the valley is a gravel road for most of the way, running through forest and in more open areas.

Back in Weisstannen, we got a lift back to Sargans, from where we took the train back home to Zürich.
