Pizol 5 lakes

Pizol 5 lakes

I did this hike together with three friends on the 11th of July, 2021. We had for some time talked about doing the Pizol 5-Seen-Wanderung from Switzerlandmobility, and decided to go. We didn’t mind the extra part from the first cable car, so we made a full loop from here.

Full route: Swisstopo

We took a train from Zürich to Saragns and continued with the bus to Pizol cable car station. It was cloudy when we started the hike, but not too cold. The first lake, Wildsee, was still snow covered, and there was also snow on the trail during different parts of the hike, but nowhere was it problematic.

The weather forecast had been changing in the days before the hike, and despite starting out in slightly grey weather, the clouds cleared as we made our way down to Schottensee. The color of this lake and the contrast to the snow around were really stunning.

The trail is in some parts narrow and relatively steep with more lose material, but we took it slow, and did not find it problematic. You walk around most of the lakes on this hike and it is great to see the landscape and lakes from all directions.

Conitnuing the hike, we made it to Schwarzsee, which was indeed rather dark compared to the lake we had just passed by. The clouds kept on rolling in and constantly covered up the  mountains around us and then in the next moment cleared again.

After Schwarzsee, we decided to stop for a lunch break. We found some nice rocks to sit on, which had really nice views in between the thick cloud cover. After our lunch break, we continued on the trail in direction of the cable car where we started.

On the last part of the trail, the sun came more and more through, and we could for the first time see rather far away and down to Sargans in the valley. I really like hiking when it is cloudy, as I find that it makes the view very mystery, but I would still like to come back and do this trail again in clear weather.

The last part of the trail back down to the cable car was easy and we took our time to enjoy the views and the day. Back at the cable car, we went down to the bus which took us to Sargans, where we caught the train back home to Zürich.
