Muotathal – Chinzig Chulm

Muotathal - Chinzig Chulm

I did this hike on the 28th of June, 2024. I had seen this hike on Switzelrandmobility, and it looked really nice. It is stage 6 of ViaSuworow, and the only thing I changed is the direction of the hike, as I prefer to walk more up than down.

Full route: Swisstopo

I took the train from Zürich to Arth-Goldau, where I changed to the bus taking me to Muotothal and the start of the hike. It was a really beautiful morning as I made my way up the first part of the trail, and I had great views to the mountains in direction Pragelpass.

I have done another hike from Muotathal to Klöntalersee, which runs under the steep mountain walls and goes over Pragelpass. It is also a really great hike, and something I got inspiration for from this hike here.

After a steep first part of the hike up through Hürital, the trail flattened out. I had so far been walking in the shade, which had been really nice, as it was already quite warm from the morning.

As I got higher up in the valley, the trail changed from gravel road to a regular hiking path, going through the fields. The surroundings here were really great, with mountains on all sides and a more wild landscape.

The trail up through the valley was relatively easy and it was a nice break before the ascent up to Chinzig Chulm. I didn’t meet any other hikers, only a few people cutting trees and some farmers, so it was generally very quiet and calm.

At the bottom of the valley, the steeper ascent started. The first short part was on a gravel road, after which the trail turned into a hiking path. Walking up was really beautiful, especially because of all the different colorful flowers filling the areas around the trail.

Almost at the top, I had great views to the distinct peaks around Schwarz Stock. The area and mountains look really interesting, and I would love to come back and do a hike there, crossing over and down on the other side.

The last part up to Chinzig Chulm was not steep, but it had become really warm, so I was quite exhausted but happy when I made it to the top. Up here, I took a long break to relax and take in the amazing views.

It was really cool to look back down in the valley and see the trail I had been walking on for the last couple of hours. From up here, I could also see some of the mountain peaks ricing up behind the valley on the border to Glarus.

After a good long break and lots of pictures, I continued over Chinzig Chulm and started the descent to the cable car. On the other side, I got the first views into canton Uri and the many mountain peaks in the distance.

The way down from Chinzig Chulm is for the first part on a hiking path with some lose material, but not difficult. There were great views to the peaks around Höch Nossen, and I generally walked slowly to enjoy the last of the hike.

Down at the cable car, I made my way down to Bürglen, from where I caught the bus to Flüelen and from there went back home to Zürich with the train.
