Muotathal - Klöntalersee
I started the hike in Muotathal, which I reached by train and bus from Zürich. It was a really nice May morning when I started the hike, and walking out of Muotathal, I already had amazing views to the mountains above Pragelpass.
I quickly made my way up on the trail, which for the first part went through fields and past houses, before it turned into a stone path. This part was really impressive and with great views to the rock walls above the trail.
After the stone path, the trail turned onto a normal gravel road, which for some time went through the open landscape. I could see Muotathal from here where I had started the hike and the still snow covered mountain peaks above.
I continued up towards Pragelpass and enjoyed the views on the way. The trail turned for a shorter part into a regular hiking trail, before I again entered the gravel road. I had not met anyone on my way so far, but as I got closer to the pass, more people started to appear.
At Pragelpass, I stopped for a lunch break, after the first long ascent. I still had quite good energy, and I decided to follow one of the trails going up above Pragelpass for a while, before descending down to Klöntalersee.
The first part of this trail was on a gravel road, which turned into a hiking path after about half an hour. Here, there also started to be some snow on the trail, so I had to take it a bit slow in some areas, but nowhere was it problematic.
There were generally really great views from this part of the trail, and I was very happy I had decided to take this route. I had seen the peak of Mieserenstock from below at Pragelpass and it was cool to now see it from the side, where it looked even more impressive.
I had hoped to get some views of Klöntalersee from above when taking this route, and I finally came to an amzing viewpoint, where I had great views down to the lake and into Glarus. I did though get very surprised about seeing how low the water level in the lake was, as I had not expected that.
From the viewpoint, I started the descent to Klöntalersee. It was a quite steep trail going though open fields and later forest. Once down, the trail followed the road down to Klöntalersee, and the views of the mountains rising above the lake were amazing.
I made my way to the campground and checked in. There were not a lot of people on the field for tents, so I had it almost to myself. I chose a great spot close to the edge of the lake, with the best views I have probably had so far from this tent.
After a shower and dinner, I took an evening walk out on the lake. It was a really special experience to walk on the lake bottom, and I used quite some time out here taking pictures, before I returned to the campground. After a great nights sleep, I took the bus back down to Glarus the next morning and made my way back to Zürich.
