Wengen – Eigergletscher

Wengen - Eigergletscher

I did this hike on the 16th of November, 2024. It was already late autumn, but since there was not too much snow yet, and it had been quite some time since I was in this area, I decided to go to Wengen and do the below loop to Eigergletscher.

Full route: Swisstopo

I went by train from Zürich to Lauterbrunnen and then up to Wengen, where I started the hike. It was a cold but very beautiful morning as I walked out of town and began the ascent, and I had perfect views to the mountains on the opposite side of the valley.

I quickly made my way up along the trail, which for the first part was mainly on gravel road and therefore easy, despite the snow cover. From up here, I could see down to the now very sunny Wengen and the mountains above Interlaken in the distance.

I continued along the trail up through forest and on the other side, I finally made it into the sun, which was very nice. I had not met anyone on the trail so far, partly because the train from Wengen up to Kleine Scheidegg was not running, so it had been a very nice and calm morning.

The landscape up here was very different from what I had been walking in for the first part of the hike. There was still a hint of autumn in the landscape, and it looked really nice with the partly snow covered sections. I made my way along the trail to Kleine Scheidegg, which I quickly passed by as it was very crowded.

From Kleine Scheidegg, I continued up on the trail in direction Eigergletscher. The path followed a gravel road, which was quite steep at times but otherwise easy to walk on. The views on the way up were amazing, and I made several stops to take pictures of the landscape.

Up at the Eigergletscher station, I had a small break to look at the views from the platform, before I continued behind the station and onto the moraine below the glacier. The views from here are amazing, both to the glaciers but also back in direction Lauterbrunnen and Mürren, and it was cool to see the trail I had just hiked.

I spend quite some time here, walking along the moraine and taking pictures. There are views to several glaciers from here, and it is just a really beautiful area. After some time, I did start to get cold as I was again in the shade, so I decided to start the descent back in direction Wengen.

Making my way back down to Kleine Scheidegg and continuing on the trail down, I could again appreciate the views in direction Mürren and all the mountain peaks around. It is an area I would really like to come back to at another time for more hiking.

As I made my way over the trail, I quickly came back in the sun and the hike down was very pleasant and mainly following a gravel road. What I really liked about this hike was how I had both amazing overviews and close up views of the area around Eigergletscher and the impressive mountain peaks above.

Almost back, I could again see Wengen, which was now fully in the sun. On the other side of the valley, I could also see the very distint peaks of Lobhörner, which I had also noticed in the morning. Back in Wengen, I took the first train down to Lauterbrunnen, from where I continued with the train back home to Zürich.
