Oey – Tschugge

Oey - Tschugge

I did this hike together with three friends on the 30th of May, 2026. One of us was coming from Lausanne, so we had been looking for hikes at an equal distance from Zürich and Lausanne ,and came across the Tschuggen-Alpwanderweg. We decided on this hike, but extended it with a few kilometers along the river at the end.

From Zürich, we reached Oey and the start of our hike, by train and bus. It was a very nice and quite warm morning when we made our way out of the town. We passed a river and then made our way up through forest, where we also got the first views of the mountains in the valley.

After about half an hour, we came to Diemtigen, which is famous for its wooden houses. There are small info boards throughout town, telling the history of the different houses and ways they were build.

Almost through town, the hiking trail turns off the road and gets quite steep for a shorter part. We hiked both in forest and more open landscape, and the trail was a mix between normal and gravel road.

Coming out in the open, we had great views to Stockhorn on the other side of the valley. The four of us, plus a few more, went there in 2024, where we did a really nice hike to the top of Stockhorn

The last part up to the Tschuggge plateau and viewpoint, was again steep, but mainly through forest, which was nice in the warm weather. From this part of the trail, there were great views into the valley and mountains on the opposite side.

Once up on the plateau, we again followed a gravel road for some time. We decided to take a short detour to a bench higher up, where we had our lunch break. From here, we had the first views  in direction south towards Naturpark Diemtigtal, which still had partly snow covered peaks.

After a nice long lunchbreak in the shade, we continued the hike. During the first part of the descent, the landscape really opened up and we had great views. The path again turned from a gravel road and into a hiking trail as we continued down.

It was a very enjoyable descent, which wasn’t too steep, and we were also very happy to get back down into the forest, as the afternoon started to be very warm. Half way through the forest, we had to cross through a very small area with cows, which is something I will never get fully relaxed doing, but it of course went fine.

Down through the forest we again came out to amazing views of the area. It was very cool to now being so close to the mountains we had been able to see small parts of at the beginning of the hike. From here, the trail was again on gravel road, which continued all the way down to the river, where it turned into a normal road.

On the last part before we were down, we could see the peak of Wiriehore, in Naturpark Diemtigtal, directly in front of us. It looked very nice, and came on my to-hike list. To the right, we also crossed under some very pointy rock walls, which looked great. I really liked how diverse the landscape on this hike was.

Back down by the river, we made a stop at a small shop, where we bought some cheese, cookies and amazing homemade ice cream from one of the farms in the area. We had initially planned to hike back to Oey, but as the busses only ran once per two hours, we decided to cut the hike short, and jump on the next bus. The bus took us back to Spiez, from where we continued back home with train.
