Flüelen – Chinzig Chulm

Flüelen - Chinzig Chulm

I hiked this trail on the 30th of May, 2025. As it looked like it was gonna be a warm day, I had searched for hikes a short train ride from Zürich. I generally prefer to hike more up than down, and I therefore chose the below trail ending at a cable car.

Full route: Swisstopo

I arrived in Flüelen with train from Zürich at 7.30am, and started the hike right from the train station. It was a beautiful morning, and after a short walk out of town, I started the ascent and quickly had great views to the mountains and Vierwaldstättersee.

I had seen on the map that I would hike through forest along the Gruonbach for some time, which was a reason I chose this path. What I had not expected was the many waterfalls along the way, which was incredibly beautiful and a hidden gem.

After about an hour, I came out of the dense forest and the hiking path turned into a gravel road which went through more openly vegetated areas. Here, I also got the first views to the mountains just above the trail, and as I made my way up, I could see more and more of canton Uri.

Up at Hüenderegg, the first top point of the hike, I took a lunch break and enjoyed the views. It was already quite warm, so I did not stay too long in the sun, but instead continued along the trail.

Continuing the hike, I could see a good part of the trail I had left to cover and it was quite cool, to see it from a distance. There were many paragliders in the sky this day, and I loved the contrast between the pink colors, the blue sky and snow covered mountain peaks.

The trail made a bend under Hagelstöckli and continued in direction Chinzig Chulm. From the top of Hüenderegg, and all along this part to the cable car station below Chinzig Chulm, the trail was relatively flat, mainly on gravel road, so it was a nice part and easy to enjoy the views of the surroundings.

I had initially only decided to hike to the cable car station, but as I still had quite good energy and not yet felt bad from the heat, I decided to hike up to Chinzig Chulm. I was once here before, hiking up from the other side from Muotathal to Chinzig Chulm, which is also a really lovely hike.

The trail up is not too steep, but does have parts with more lose material and smaller steps. Up at Chinzig Chulm, I sat in the shade of the small chapel for a while, to cool down and have my last snacks, after which I took some time walking around and taking pictures.

There were really great views into the valley on the other side and to some of the mountain peaks in canton Schwyz. It was also fun to see how different it looked from the year before, where I had hiked here in August and everything was green and in full bloom.

I decided to hike back down to the cable car, and on the way really enjoyed the views to the peaks around Höch Nossen. Back down at the cable car, I only had to wait a short while until the next ride down. Once down in Bürglen, I took the next bus back to Flüelen, and from there continued back home to Zürich by train.
