Engelberg – Engstlenalp

Engelberg - Engstlenalp

I did this hike on the 13th of September, 2025. One of my friends was hiking through Switzerland on the Via Alpina, and me and another friend joined him for this, and the following stage.

Full route: Swisstopo

We took the train from Zürich to Luzern, and from there the train to Engelberg, where we started the hike. The weather forecast had been changing a lot in the days before, but starting out in the morning, the sky was blue and sun shining.

After a flat part out of Engelberg, the ascent up towards Trübsee starts. All the way up to the lake, you have very nice views to the mountains surrounding Engelberg, and we took our time taking pictures.

We reached Trübsee, and decided to take a lunch break before the next ascent up to Jochpass. Depsite it being a weekend, there wasn’t too many people around Trübsee, which was nice. From here, we also had the first views to Titlis Gletcher.

After the lunch break, we continued up in direction Jochpass. As you get close to the pass, you have very nice views to the glacier, and the starting autumn colors made for some beautiful views.

Passing over Jochpass, it was still nice weather with blue skies, and we decided to take a break and a drink at the restaurant on top.

The clouds slowly starting coming in, while we were at Jochpass, so after a drink, we started the descent towards Engstlenalp. The trail over Jochpass is some places narrow and steep, but nowhere did we find it problematic.

Despite the clouds, we had great views coming down towards Engstlensee. The starting autumn colors were even better on this side of the pass, and we once again took our time to enjoy the surroundings.

As we got closer to Engstlenalp, we also got the first views of mountains in direction Wetterhorn with their impressive glacier covered peaks.

Past Engstlensee, it was only a short walk to Engstlenalp Hotel, where we were staying for the night. This is a very nice hotel with old-style rooms, and after a warm long shower, we enjoyed a calm and relaxing evening, before going to bed.
