Monte Boglia

Monte Boglia

I did this hike on the 10th of December, 2025. I had for some time been wanting to go to Monte Boglia, and since it looked almost snow free on the maps, I decided to do the hike below. Ticino is one of my go to areas for winter hiking, as you can often find snow free trails at relatively high elevations.

Full route: Swisstopo

I started this hike in Brè, which I reached, taking a bus from Lugano train station. After a short walk out of the village, I started the ascent towards Monte Boglia. First, you hike up through forest, but since it was winter and there were no leaves on the trees, I quickly had very nice views to he mountains in the distance and lake Lugano below.

After some time hiking through the forest, I made it into the open landscape, on the part before reaching Monte Boglio. The weather was great and the low hanging clouds made for some great scenery.

The last part up to Monte Boglio was steep and had a few snow patches covering the trail. Generally, the trail was relatively easy throughout the hike, although more narrow a few places, but nowhere did I find it problematic.

Up at Monte Boglio, I took a long break to relax after the ascent, and to enjoy the views. From up here, I also got the first views towards the north, and the long mountain ridge going past Denti della Vecchia towards the peak of Gazzirola, which I would like to hike at one point.

I had quite good energy, and decided to hike a short part of the ridge, before turning around back to Brè. There was more snow on this side of Monte Boglia and a few places ice, but I  made my way down in a slow pace without problems.

The short part of the ridge I hiked was really great. This area is more rocky and winds it way up and down and in and out of forest. I walked for about half an hour in this direction, before I decided to turn around back towards Brè.

There are many great rock formations along the way, and I will definetley have to come back and hike more on this trail. From here, I again had views to the snow covered peaks in the far distance, which looked great as a contrast to the brown landscape.

Along a large part of this trail, you hike on the border between Switzerland and Italy, which was also marked by the different hiking signs in a few places. The path back to Brè was nice and easy down through forest and back into the village.

Back in Brè, I caught the bus back to Lugano trains station, from where I got on the direct train back home to Zürich.
