Ftan - Alp Laret
I did this hike together with two friends on the 25th of July, 2026. My friends were visiting from Denmark and we met up in Scuol for the weekend. I was once before in Val Tasna, hiking from Ardez to Piz Clünas, and since I really liked the valley, I had suggested the below hike.

After a train ride from Zürich, I met with my friends in Scuol from where we continued with bus to Ftan and the start of the hike. We quickly made it out of the village and after about half an hour, we entered Val Tasna. We followed the gravel road leading into the valley for a short while and then crossed over the river and continued on the hiking path on the other side.
The hiking path took us up above the valley floor, from where we had great views into Val Tasna as well as back towards the mountains above Scuol and Tarasp. The hiking trail was easy and only with short steeper parts so it was a pleasant walk into the valley, despite it being a warm morning.
Towards the end of the valley, the trail crossed back over the river and we decided on a small snack break, before starting the ascent up in direction Alp Laret. Just before reaching the end of the valley, we had come across multiple marmots that all seemed very relaxed and not bothered by our presence, which was a very nice experience.
Filled with new energy after our break, we started the ascent up to Alp Laret. The first half hour was relatively steep and we quickly made it up above the valley. The views from here to the mountains on the Swiss-Austrian border were amazing, and when the trail flattened out, we could again see the mountains in direction Scuol and Tarasp.
After a beautiful walk high up above the valley, we made it to Alp Laret. Here, there is a nice restaurant and as it had gotten quite warm, we decided to stop for a cold drink before continuing. From Alp Laret, you have great views to the main valley in Lower Engadine as well as the side valleys and mountains on the opposite side bordering the Swiss National Park.
We continued from Alp Laret on the hiking trail in direction Motta Naluns, from where we would take the cable car down. This part of the hike had great panoramic views and it wasn’t demanding as it constantly changed between shorter sections of up and down.
Throughout the last hour of the hike, we walked past many different wildflowers, which made for some great pictures. Some of the flowers had started to look quite sad because of the very warm weather and longer time without rain, but most were still happy and in full bloom.
The last part of the trail back to the cable car at Motta Naluns followed a wider gravel road, which made for an easy end to the hike. We took the cable car down to Scuol, which takes you down right next to the train station. We spent the evening and night in Scuol, enjoying some good food and a small thunderstorm.
