I did this hike on the 5th of February, 2024. I had been looking for something not too far from Zürich and I was once before in Braunwald, and really liked it, so I decided to go and see how far the snow would allow me to hike.
Full route: Swisstopo
I took the train from Zürich to the Braunwaldbahn and after a short ride up to Braunwald, I started the hike. The weather was perfect and I immediately had great views towards Ortstock near Braunwald and into the valley and surrounding mountains.
As I walked away from Braunwald, there started to be more snow on the path, but as it for most of the part was a wide gravel road turning into a wide hiking path, it wasn’t really problematic.
Walking around the bend under Ortstock and aproaching Nussbühl, I had very nice views back in the valley running away from Linthal and towards the peaks of Hausstock and Ruchi above.
After passing Nussbühl, the trail changes to a narrow hiking trail and from here it was fully snow covered. As the snow wasn’t too deep, I walk for about 30 min in the snow and into the forest, but had to give up, once the hiking path starting getting steeper and more narrow.
Walking back, I again crossed small meltwater rivers and enjoyed the constant views towards the mountains on the other side and the very sunny weather.
Back in Braunwald, I again enjoyed the views of the surrounding landscape as I had some time before the next ride with the Braunwaldbahn was possible. Once I got down, I took the train back to first Ziegelbrücke and then Zürich.
