Bumbach – Sörenberg

Bumbach - Sörenberg

I did this hike together with a friend on the 21st of March, 2026. It was still very early in the season, and while looking for relatively snow free hikes, we came across the area just west of Sörenberg and decided to go there and do the below hike.

Full route: Swisstopo

We started the hike just after Bumbach, which we reached by train and bus from Zürich. The first part of the hike was relatively flat, and we had very nice views to the surrounding mountains as we made our way through the area.

It was a cloudy but not too cold day, and for the first long part, we did not have any snow on the trail. The area was competely empty, except of a few local farmers, working in the fields, so it was very quiet and calm.

When we made it to Kemmeribodenbad, the trail turned off into forest, and we started the first real ascent of the day. It was a nice, although steep part through the forest, but as we came out on the other side, we had really great views over the area and the mountains behind.

After following the gravel road for some time, we again entered forest and walked along a river. What I really liked about this hike was how we constantly changed between walking in forest and out in the open landscape.

Out of the forest again, we came to antoher steeper part, which lead us up to a small viewspoint with a bench, where we decided to have lunch. The sky had become more grey, but the views from our lunchspot was still really great.

We decided to cut the lunch break short, as it had got more windy and cold. We continued on the trail, and the higher we got, the more snow was on the trail. We had designed this hike so the last part followed a winter hiking path, so we knew it would still be fine to walk on and it turned out to be a good choice.

As we made it to the top, the sky cleared again, and we could see some of the mountains surrounding the area  around Sörenberg. We again walked partly in forest, and for the last part before we started the descent, we walked next to cross country ski trails.

Most of the descent was on a normal road and snow free, so it was a nice easy end to the hike. There were great views all the way down to Sörenberg, which we reached just in time to catch the bus back to Schüpfheim train station, from where we made our way back home to Zürich with the train.
