Sunnbüel – Gemmipass

Sunnbüel - Gemmipass

I did this hike together with a colleague on the 12th of September, 2021. We were going two days on field work in this area, and decided to start the weekend by hiking up to the hotel at Gemmipass, where we would be staying.

Full route: Swisstopo

It was a very nice autumn morning, when we started the hike at the Sunnbüel cable car station. It was my first time visiting this area after moving to Switzerland, and I found it really impressive, right from the beginning.

After the first short climb up from the cable car station, we had amazing views back in direction Kandersteg and into Gasteretal. The trail up was at places steep with lose material, but nowhere was it problematic for us.

We made it up and were right under the peak of Gällihore, which we passed by, as we continued along the ridge. The relatively low clouds made for some very nice scenery the entire day, as they constantly change their position around the mountains.

We followed the ridge all the way to Schwarzgrätli, where we turned off the trail in direction Schwarebach Berghotel. Just as we started the descent, we came across a small lake, which had an amzing color, and we decided to have a short break here.

Down at the hotel, we stopped for a longer break and had coffee and pie. My colleague had been here before and recommended the pie, and it was really tasty and huge slices. Completely full, we slowly continued the hike, which was now on a gravel road leading up to Daubensee.

We walked passed Daubensee, and the views with the clouds and colors of the landscape were absolutely amazing. Although it was still early in autumn, you could sense the slightly yellow and brown changes in the vegetation, which looked great against the grey rock walls.

Before reaching the hotel where we would stay for the next two days, we decied to walk a bit further into Lämmerenboden on the valley floor. It was a beautiful walk, with many smaller waterfalls coming down on the side of the valley.

We didn’t walk all the way into the valley, but long enough to have great views to Lämmerengletscher. Down below the glacier to the right, we could also see the Lämmerenhütte, which could be great to visit at one point.

We slowly made it back towards our hotel for the night, and after a long shower and a nice dinner, we enjoyed an amzing sunset view from the window of our room, before going to bed.
