Mostelberg – Brunni

Mostelberg - Brunni

I have been hiking in this area a couple of time, both during summer and winter. I initially came across the area, because I saw some pictures of the suspension bridge at Mostelberg, but the trails here also offer really nice panoramic views. The trail below and the pictures are based on the different times I have been in this area.

Full route: Swisstopo

You reach Mostelberg from Sattel by cable car and you can start the hike right away. The suspension bridge is only 5 minutes from the cable car, and it is a very nice start to the hike, walking over the suspension bridge and looking down on the river below.

After the suspension bridge, the trail makes a loop back to Mostelberg, from where the hike continues up through the forest. In winter, there is a winter hike going this way, so the trail is well maintained all year round.

On the first part through the forest you have views in direction Rigi. When I hiked here in winter, it was one of those days where the clouds are really low, covering up the valley, and it looked amazing to see Rigi rise up from the sea of clouds.

As you continue on the trail, you slowly make your way through the forest and turn in direction Vierwaldstättersee and Schwyz. Also here, there were amazing views of the snow covered mountains rising up through the clouds.

After the first hour you start to make your way out of the forest and into the open landscape. The gravel road turns into a normal road all the way up, until you turn off in direction Mythen. It is a very nice part with amazing views of the surrounding mountains.

Coming out of the forest you can also see the peaks of Mythen. I find it nice to visit the same area in different seasons, and here I had managed to take almost identical pictures at two different times.

One of the times I did this hike, I returned to Mostelberg, but the hike described here, which I did in summer, takes you to the Mythen peaks and down to Brunni. To get to the Mythen peaks, you leave the road and conitune on a hiking path for the rest of the way. It is a very nice and relatively easy path that takes you through forest, below the Mythen peaks and then on a more open trail down to Brunni.

Down in Brunni, we took the bus back to Einsiedeln, from where we made our way back home to Zürich by train.
