Alpthal – Mythen

Alpthal - Mythen

I did this hike together with a friend on the 6th of November, 2022. We had been looking for snowshoe options, but ended up deciding on the trail below. On the maps, it looked like the trail would in part be snow covered, so we brought our gaiters but not snowshoes.

Full route: Swisstopo

We started out in Alpthal, which we reached by train and bus from Zürich. It had snowed the days before, but not too much, and we could easily make our way up towards the ridge trail.

The first part of the trail was up through forest an the higher we got, the more snow was on the trees. Zürich was completely snow free, so it was a nice change in scenery and winter feeling.

Almost up on the ridge, we got the first views over the area and in direction Mythen and Schwyz. There was more snow on the trail up here, but not so much that snowshoes would have been needed.

As we made our way over the first part of the ridge, we also got closer to the Mythen peaks, which looked absolutely stunning. The snow line was very clear and we could also see the snow covered Rigi in the background.

This ridge hike is really nice, and all along, you have great views over the area in all directions. It was beautiful with the fresh snow everywhere, but I would also like to come back at one point in summer, and see the difference.

Before turning off in direction Mythen, we had amazing views to Fronalpstock, Chlingenstock and Chaiserstock, just on the border between the cantons Schwyz and Uri. Here, we also saw some ufo-like cloud formation that made the scenery even more special.

We turned off in direction Mythen, which the trail passed just below. It was cool to see the peaks both from far away and up close. There weren’t many people on the trail, so even the area around the Mythen peaks, was almost empty.

After passing the Mythen peaks, we made our way down in direction Alpthal. The trail here was snow free, and although the snow layer had not been thick, it was nice to again have grass under our shoes.

Back in Alpthal, we took the bus back to Einsiedeln and from there made our way back home to Zürich.
