Oberblegisee - Gumen
I did this hike on the 9th of August, 2025. I had been at Oberblegisee before in winter, but really wanted to visit in summer as well. I really like the area around Braunwald, so I decided do the hike below, with a visit to Oberblegisee and then cross over to the area above Braunwald.

After a train ride from Zürich, I started the hike from Luchsingen train station. It was early morning when I started, but already quite warm. I quickly made my way up on the trail and got the first views to Tödi, the highest mountain in Glarus. Not long after starting the hike, I came across a snake, which didn’t really seem to mind me walking by.
The trail up to Oberblegisee was at times quite steep, but generally easy, mainly being on gravel road or relatively flat hiking paths. Up at Oberblegisee, I was completely alone, and I took a break to relax after the first ascent and to enjoy the views.
The area around Oberblegisee is really beautiful and I walked around for some time to take pictures and watch the different views. In the distance, I could see the peaks of Eggstock, which my hiking path would lead me below later in the day.
I left Oberblegisee and continued along the small gravel road in direction Braunwald. This part was relatively flat, and it was a nice break after the first part up to the lake. I had been alone on the trail so far, but started to meet more people as I left Oberblegisee.
Before the second ascent of the day, there was a short part along a river, that I in the end crossed over. On the other side, the gravel road turned into a hiking trail, and after a short while, I ran into a group of very friendly goats, enjoying a calm morning in the shade.
I continued up in direction Gumen, and constantly had views to Eggstock. It was getting warmer and I made quite a lot of shorter breaks in the shade, to avoid feeling bad later in the day. This part of the trail was very nice and filled with wildflowers.
Almost at the top of the hike, and just before reaching the area around Gumen, I had to go through the mountain in a tunnel, which was a nice addition to the hike. On the other side, I had really great views to many of the mountain peaks in southern Glarus.
My initial plan had been to stop at Gumen, but I felt very energetic this day, so I decided to make an extra loop and continued on the trail past the cable car station at Gumen. It was a really nice extension of the hike, and I came closer to some of the mountains above Braunwald and generally had amazing views out over the valley.
Back up in Gumen, I took some time to enjoy the views over the area where I had just hiked, before I took the cable car down. From the cable car station below, I walked back to Braunwald where I took the Braunwaldbahn down to the train, and from there continued back home to Zürich.
