Glarus – Klöntalersee

Glarus - Klöntalersee

I did this hike on the 26th of June, 2022. It was one of the first hikes I did alone, so I wanted something close by, and a friend recommended me to go to Klöntalersee. There is a bus going up to the lake, but I thought it could be nice to hike up, and I therefore did the below loop from Glarus.

Full route: Swisstopo

I reached Glarus after an easy train ride from Zürich and started my hike directly from the train station. The weather was great, and walking out of Glarus and through the first part with forest, I had views to the surrounding mountain peaks.

Coming out of the more densely vegetated part, I could see the mountains on both sides of me. The path during most of this hike is an easy wider gravel road, and only shorter sections are on more narrow hiking path.

After some time, you again enter a more densely vegetated part. I find it nice when the trail changes like this, and you constantly have something new to look at. There wasn’t many hikers on the trail and only a few people with mountainbikes, so I mainly had the path to myself.

Passing over the top and coming out of the forest, you have great views down over Klöntalersee. I had seen pictures of the lake, but it was even better in real life and the colors were absolutely stunning.

I made my way down to the lake, where I took a long break to enjoy the views. The lake from here, almost looked like a long Norwegian fjord, just continuing endlessly. I walked along the lake side for some time, before I decided to start the descent back towards Glarus.

The way back down, was different from the way up. It was more wild and for some time, I walked along a small river, which was nice. Looking back, I could for some time still see the mountains above Klöntalersee in the distance.

My friend, who had recomended me the hike, had also told me about this old stone bridge on the way down from the lake. My trail did not cross the bridge, but I made a short detour on the other side, to see the bridge from all directions, before I continued on the path down.

On the last part down, I again came out of the forest and could see the mountains on the opposite side of the valley. The path again turned into a gravel road, which I followed back to Glarus, from where I made my way back to Zürich with the train.
