Airolo – Lago Tremorgio

Airolo - Lago Tremorgio

I did this hike together with a friend on the 2nd of October, 2022. In our search for hikes, we came across the Tremorgio-Höhenweg, which looked very nice, and since the weather in Ticino should be good, we decided to go.

Full route: Swisstopo

We went by train from Zürich to Airolo, from where we took the bus to the Pesciüm cable car. Once up, we started the hike from the cable car station. It was perfect weather, and we instantly had great views to the mountains above us and back in direction Airolo.

The first kilometers were relatively flat, and it was a nice calm and very beautiful start to the hike. The trail constantly changed between parts in forest and parts through open landscape, with great views into the valley below and to the mountains in the area around Lake Ritòm, where I have done another hike.

It was still early in autumn, but the larch trees in this area had already started changing color, and it was really beautiful to walk through. Autumn is my favourite season as I really love the colors and fresh crisp air, so I was very happy to see how much the surroundings had already changed here.

After about an hour, we came to the first lake, Lago di Ravina. The surroundings of the lake were very beautiful and peaceful, and we decided to stop for a small break. We had only met a few other people on the trail so far, and here by the lake we were almost alone.

Continuing the hike, the autumn colors of the landscape really showed off. It was not only the larch trees, but also the smaller bushes and mosses in the area, and we took a lot of pictures along this part of the trail.

After walking through a more densely vegetated area, the landscape opened up, and I still remember the feeling of pure joy. The red, brown and orange colors against the lightly snow covered mountains just looked stunning.

We made our way through the open landscape and came to the second lake of the day, Lago di Prato. The water had a great green color, and we decided to have our lunch break here. Looking back on the trail we had just walked, we could see some of the snow covered mountains around the Gotthard pass.

Filled with new energy after our lunch break, we continued along the trail, and for a while, we had direct views over to the area around and to Lake Ritòm itself. The trail on this hike was generally easy, although narrow in parts and with a few places with larger steps and rocks to walk on.

I really like all the lakes you pass on this hike, especially because they seemed so different despite being located relatively close. The third lake of the day was Lago della Valletta. The trail just passed by the end of it, but we took a smaller detour along the lake to enjoy the setting and mountains around.

From here, the trail went down for some time, before the last ascent up in direction Lago Tremorgio. The last part up was at times steep and we started to be tired, so we got very happy at the sight of Lago Tremorgio, the largest lake of the day.

It was a nice walk down to the lake and we could see a hiking trail on the other side of the lake, which I would like to come back to at one point. We spend some time down by the lake before we took the cable car down to Rodi. Here, we caught the bus to Airolo and took the train back home to Zürich.
