La Rösa - Alp Grüm
I did this hike on the 24th of October, 2025 as part of a 5 day autumn hiking trip, where I stayed in Poschiavo. I really wanted to visit Alp Grüm, as I had only been driving by in the train, and I decided to combine it with a visit to Piz Campasc and ended with the hike below.
Full route: Swisstopo
I took the bus from Poschiavo station to La Rösa where I started the hike. It was a beautiful but cold morning with blue skies and sun, when I walked along the start of the trail. It had been raining the evening before, which overnight had turned into snow, so the landscape was covered in a white blanket and there was fresh snow on the surrounding mountain peaks.
I followed the trail towards the peak of Gess, from where the trail turned off in direction Passo del Bernina. On this part, I got the first views to the top of Piz Campasc, which I would later hike up to. Following the trail, I crossed the road and continued up in direction of the Bernina pass and the distinct mountains above.
The views from this part of the trail were absolutely amazing with the still golden larch trees and freshly snow covered mountains in the background. I had hiked in Val da Camp just below the mountain peaks a few days before in thick fog, so it was nice to see the mountains so clearly.
Up at the Bernina pass, I followed the trail leading up to Piz Campasc, which stood out in the landscape in front of me. As I slowly made my way up over the trail, I had great views to the peaks of Piz Canton and Piz Varuna and the area around Alp Grüm, where I would later end the hike. There was still snow and in part ice on the trail, so I walked slowly as the trail to the top in some places are quite narrow.
Looking back in the direction I had come from, I could see Lago Blanco, the Bernina pass and even some of the mountains in the far distance above St. Moritz. To the north, I could see over the entire area I had walked through most of the morning, with the road going into Italy and in direction Livigno.
I finally made it to the top, and took a break after the slightly demanding last part. The views were absolutely stunning and I could see really far in all directions. I had not met a single person for the last hour, and it was very nice to be alone up here and be fully able to enjoy the peace and calmness.
Walking back down, the trail ran for a short while along the lake to the end where I crossed over on the dam. On this part, I could see Piz Campasc from different directions, and it is funny how different a peak looks depending on the angle.
After crossing over the lake, I followed the trail, and the landscape and views into the area around Alp Grüm opened up. The autumn colors against the fresh snow were amazing and I took a lot of breaks taking photos and enjoying the views.
The last part down to Lagh da Palü was a bit steep at times but not problematic, and it was great getting back down in between the larch trees. I walked for some time along the lake and took a short break in the sun, before I walked up to the Alp Grüm train station, where I caught the train back to Poschiavo.
