Morteratsch - Diavolezza
I did this hike on the 20th of October, 2025. I was staying 5 days in Poschiavo to do different autumn hikes and chase golden larches. I had already visited the Morteratsch Glacier the year before during summer, but it is a place I am sure I will return to many times.

As I was staying in Poschiavo, I took the train from Pochiavo running over the Bernina Pass to Morteratsch, where I started the hike. The trail starts right at the train station, and quickly takes you up above the valley. The larches were fading, but still made for some nice scenery, framing the views to Morteratsch Glacier.
The hiking trail is relatively easy, and for the first part through forest, which opens up the closer you get to the glacier. Along the whole trail, I was surrounded by larch trees and their golden autumn colors.
At various places along the trail, it is possible to get up on the ridge for better views over the area. Before turning around, I climbed up on the ridge and had great views to Morteratsch Glacier, and the clear markings of its Little Ice Age extent in the landscape.
Half way back, I took the trail leading down into the valley, which is also very nice. From here, you have a different perspective of everything, and along the trail, you have info pillars marking the extent of the Glacier through most recent time.
Back in Morteratsch, I decided to extent the hike, as I could see I still had some time before the rain would start. I therefore decided to walk up to the train station Diavolezza, which initially took me past smaller waterfalls and ponds at Cascata de Bernina, with views into the valley in direction Pontresina.
I hiked up to follow a trail above the road. From up here, I had nice views into the valley below, although the clouds starting covering up more and more of the surroundings.
The rain started just as I reached Diavolezza trains station, and I could enjoy the weather from the warm train making my way back to Poschiavo.
