Val Roseg

Val Roseg

I did this hike together with a friend on the 19th of October, 2025. I was spending 5 days in Poschiavo hiking, and did this hike in on the way there. Autumn in Engadine and around the Bernina pass is something very special, and I had for some time been wanting to visit this valley.

Full route: Swisstopo

We started out in Pontresina and began the walk into the valley. In autumn, all the larch trees in this region turns yellow and orange, and it is one of my absolute favourite periods of the year. For the first part of this hike, you walk along the river between the larch trees into the valley.

Following the valley floor, you make it out of the forest and into an open area at the valley bottom. Here, you can also see a large moraine from the retreating glacier. There is a restaurant in here, and we decided to stop for a coffee, before starting the ascent up to Fuorcla Surlej.

After our morning break, we continued and started the ascent. The hiking path winds its way in and out of forest on the way up, and it was great walking between the larch trees while rising above the valley.

Once we made it above the tree line, we had really nice views to the surrounding mountains and glaciers. The clouds cleared a bit on our way up, and we enjoyed the sun and slightly warmer temperatures.

Up on Fuorcla Surlej, we decided to have our lunch break. The views from up here were amazing and we also used quite some time walking around taking pictures. We had direct views to Piz Bernina and the Tschierva glacier below. There is a hut just in front of this glacier, which I would really like to come back to at one point.

After a nice long break we continued over the pass. On the other side, we had amazing views over Silvaplanersee and towards a cloud covered Val Bregaglia, with the mountain peaks rising through the clouds.

We made our way down, while enjoying the views to the mountains on the other side of the lake. The trail was a more narrow hiking path in the beginning, but quickly turned into a gravel road for most of the way back.

The hike ended with another part through forest, and it was nice to be back among the larch trees. We walked back to Silvaplana-Surlej, from where we took a bus back to St. Moritz. I continued to Poschiavo from here, where I was staying for more autumn hiking.
